fishes on plates
Non-food items at Borough Market.
I'm writing a essay for one of my courses about Borough Market, so have been spending a lot of time there lately. I promise the Borough Market pictures will ease up as soon as I turn in my essay...

brownie shard!
Arrived at Borough Market early enough on Saturday to see this impressive creation at the Flour Power City Bakery stall. They'd sold enough brownies by noon that it was unrecognizable.
But you can tell what it is, right? It's the Shard (that omnipresent, all-seeing eye as fellow blogger raskolniikov rightly described it)! You really can't escape it.

books and sun
We have been having some fabulous sunny days this week. These photos are from a little while back, but they capture the glory that is London in the sun. Above is the South Bank book market looking to the west...and below is the same scene, taken minutes later, looking to the east.

Street Where the Riches of Ages are Stowed
As that catchy tune from Bedknobs and Broomsticks promises, Portobello Road is the "street where the riches of ages are stowed." And here are some of them. Antiquities for a few bob apiece.
At the risk of sounding preachy, if you go in for this kind of thing, please make sure that you know exactly where the pieces are coming from. Many of them are illegally dug up or looted and smuggled into the country; important artifacts and works of art ripped from their contexts and shipped over to adorn some middle-class Brit's living room. The illicit trade in antiquities is disturbing and disgusting and alive and well. So there's my tuppence.

Brick Lane, 2006
Laptop's on the fritz, so we're digging in to the archives. Well into the archives. This was taken on a vacation trip to London in 2006. Brick Lane market was entirely oustide then. On my recent trip back to the Sunday market a few weeks ago it's mostly moved indoors and there are far fewer random folk selling junk. It's much more organised, though a bit less charming as a result.

Melted cheese
After a long day museum-ing, what better way to refuel than with a melted cheese sandwich at the Kappacasein stall in Borough Market. Heaven for a mere £5.
