Thames in the Fog

We've had some rather foggy, wintery weather lately (finally got below 50 for the high yesterday). This makes for some spectacular views of the Eye and the Houses of Parliament from Waterloo Bridge.

sunset over the thames

Back in London and getting ready to greet autumn which is surely just around the corner (if not already here). I wouldn't be so sad about the changing seasons if only we'd had a proper summer...

Tall Ship

Ran to grab my camera when this tall ship drifted under Tower Bridge. See the people hanging on the masts? Looks a little dangerous to me.

high tide

Remember this posting a while back of the busker on the banks of the Thames? Well, here is that exact same spot at high tide. I forget about the Thames's tides until I'm forced to remember it at times like this.

busking

This guitarist punching out blues riffs under Millennium Bridge really caught my attention. I rarely give money to buskers -- perhaps I'm picky about my music -- but he deserved it. Quite a gimmick. He goes by the name Flame Proof Moth.

Beached boat

Not sure if you can really tell in this picture, but I witnessed a yacht get stranded on Tower Bridge a few days ago after a particularly forceful and dramatic squall hit the Thames.

I may or may not get up at 4 to watch the Solstice sunrise this morning. If I do, I promise pictures.

Tower Bridge rising

I have a new job and--lucky me--this is the view I had out my window yesterday. Atmospheric rain and everything.

modern-day mudlarks

Remember this post from a while back showing the Mudlark pub in Southwark? Here are some real life modern day mudlarks searching for treasures on the banks of the Thames. The Society of Thames Mudlarks make regular excursions down to the river and were instrumental in uncovering some interesting archaeology a while back.

camouflage

This month's Theme Day on City Daily Photo is "Edges." This photo clearly shows how the HMS Belfast has been painted to melt into its surroundings -- it's hard to tell where the ship ends and the city begins. In other words, their edges blend together. Ta da!

City Hall

Relatively classic shot of City Hall and Tower Bridge. I really like City Hall -- looks a bit like a ship with it's sails puffed out by the wind.

Another Fine Day

More evidence of the glorious day we had on Friday. Not a cloud in the sky. Not a single one. I thought I'd never live to see the day.

One Fine Day

Had a rare cloudless day in the city today. Shirked my duties and went for a walk along the Thames. Snapped these fellows similarly taking advantage of the fine weather.

Shard

A view of Southwark from the Millenium Bridge on a partly cloudy day. Notice the building under construction in the left part of the frame. Someday, this is going to be the Shard London Bridge and will apparently be the tallest building in the European Union when it is completed in 2012. Some interesting artist's renderings right over here. Thoughts? Kind of looks horribly out of place to me, but I guess this is the future of London. Developers like these enormous skyscrapers a lot more than the old three-story 19th-century warehouses.

St. Paul's

May not be the classic shot from Millenium Bridge, but I am so proud of this photo anyway. Had to balance it on a wall and use the timer, all the while cursing because I don't have a tripod. But I think it turned out brilliantly anyway. It was a cloudy, rainy night and you can really see in this shot why the stars are never visible in London -- far too much light pollution.
